News Death Notice

BROMBAUGH, Dr. Burlin 99, of Beavercreek, Ohio, formerly of Germantown, Ohio, died October 6, 2009, at Trinity Community of Beavercreek. He was born May 7, 1910, in Madison Township to the late Albert Sebastian and Ada (Lesher) Brombaugh. After graduation from Trotwood Madison High School in 1928, and from The Ohio State University School of Optometry in 1933, he married Katherine Mary Christman of Eaton in 1934. The couple moved to Germantown in 1936, where he resided until 1998. During winters from 1977 until 2001 he resided in Sun City, AZ. Dr. Brombaugh was employed by Inland Division of General Motors for 39 years, retiring in 1972 as Section Engineer in charge of Customer Product Design for friction material and hydraulic brake hose. He also practiced optometry in Germantown until 1973. As a faithful member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Germantown, he served variously as President of the Consistory, Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Chair of the Building Committee and twice as Chair of Organ Committees. With his brother Harvey he funded and managed construction of a significant addition to the lower level of the church building completed in 2000. While in Arizona, he was a member of the United Church of Sun City. In the wider denomination he served on the Board of Homeland Ministries of the United Church of Christ. In retirement he was a Volunteer Executive (Consultant) with the International Executive Service Corps of New York City, working on a project with Francisco Stedile S.A. at Caxias do Sul, Brazil, in the early 1970s. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a Life Member of The Ohio State Alumni Association, Ohio Optometric Association, a Life Member of the Germantown Historical Society, Antioch Shrine Temple, and Ancient and Accepted Order of Scottish Rite. In Germantown he served on civic committees and boards and was a past President of the Board of Education of Germantown Public Schools and past chair of the Zoning Commission. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Katherine; his second wife, the former Esther Haynes Pestrup, whom he married in 1975; his third wife, the former Vera Klepinger Mitchell, whom he married in 1990; his daughter, Linda Hapner; his brother Harvey Brombaugh; and sisters Mary Stockslager and Loretta Izor. Survivors include two sons, John Burlin (Christa) Brombaugh of Eugene, OR; Dr. Mark Allen (The Rev. Kathryn Nichols) Brombaugh of Lakewood, WA; daughter Jo Ann (John) Wittmann of Lanham, MD; step-daughter Ann Mitchell of Columbus; two grandsons, Eric (Jill Kuester) Brombaugh of Mesa, AZ, and Daniel (Rachel) Brombaugh of Seattle, WA; granddaughter Adrienne (Paul) Wiebusch of Melbourne, Australia; 2 great-grandchildren Mollie Brombaugh and Johann Wiebusch; six nephews and one niece. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 11, at 4:00pm, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Germantown, The Rev. Dr. Larry Grunden, officiating, and Dr. Paul Tegels, organist. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ. Germantown, or Trinity Community of Beavercreek. Arrangements by Arpp & Root Funeral Home, Germantown.
