The county of Bedford, Pennsylvania was created March 9, 1771, by an act of the General Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania. The reason cited for the establishment of the new county was, "the great hardships the inhabitants of the western parts of the county of Cumberland lie under, from being so remote from the present seat of judicature and the public offices." The area originally comprising Bedford County was vast, but over time has been subdivided by the establishment of approximately twenty additional counties, starting in 1772.
